Canada-US hockey tournament to be played in Hong Kong this year
Canada’s Olympic participation in 2020 is contingent on securing the participation of Hong Kong’s Olympic team, the Canadian Hockey Association announced Monday.
The tournament is set to begin in November, but will be rescheduled to coincide with the 2019 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in the country’s summer.
The CCHA is looking to hold the tournament in the Hong Kong capital city in 2020, which would be the first time a Canadian Olympic team has played at home in the host city since the 2020 Olympics.
“The CCA has always had a strong desire to host the 2020 Olympic Games in Hong kong,” CCHA executive director David Miller said in a statement.
“We believe the Olympic experience is one of the most significant aspects of hosting an Olympic Games, and we are excited about the opportunity to continue to grow our community of players and athletes in the sport of hockey in Canada.”
The CCHL will also field two Canadian players in the Olympic tournament, with players like Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel slated to play.
McDavid, who was selected No. 2 overall in the 2016 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators, will play in the tournament for the first and second years of his NHL career.
Eichl, a second-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, will take over the captaincy from McDavid, and will likely be one of Canada’s best players during the tournament.
The first of the two Canadians will take the ice in the CCHA’s first game on Dec. 31 at the Sheraton Vancouver Hotel.
The other will play the first game in the second-to-last game of the tournament on Feb. 5 at the Bell Centre in Toronto.
The next three games will be played at the Rogers Centre, with games being played on Feb, Mar, and Apr. The final two games will occur in Toronto on May 23 and in Montreal on May 24.
The two games are scheduled to be contested in the same venue.
The event will include six teams in all, with the first eight teams competing in the WHL playoffs, with a final game scheduled for June 6 at the Canadian Tire Centre in Hamilton.
The final three games are set for the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), with two each in Regina and Gatineau, Que.
The tournament will also be played against the Ontario Universities Athletic Association (OUA) team.
The Canadian Hockey League is the top level of professional hockey in North America and is held in both the North American Hockey League and the Canadian Football League.
