Why the Aegis is here to stay
Australia’s defence budget is currently $8.3 billion.
That is $1.2 billion above the global average, which is $2.5 billion.
It is a higher level than any other nation, with a combined defence budget of $5.5 trillion.
What is the AegIS?
Australia has four aircraft carriers.
Two are already in service.
They are the USS George Washington and USS Nimitz.
These ships are based in Yokosuka in Japan.
The USS George W. Bush is in the Arabian Gulf and the USS Nimrod is in Singapore.
The two cruisers are in the eastern Indian Ocean.
The other three ships are in Western Australia.
The Aegis has three aircraft carriers: the USS Harry S Truman and the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.
Australia’s naval assets The Aegi-class is Australia’s largest single-building shipbuilding program.
It has a total of 14 aircraft carriers and two frigates.
It was originally designed to replace the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) older Aegis class ships.
However, the Navy is considering replacing the older ship with a modern Aegis-class destroyer.
In 2015, the US Navy bought four Aegis destroyers, and in 2017, Australia bought five.
Australia has eight submarines, a fleet of six amphibious assault ships, and four aircraft carrier strike groups.
The US Navy is the only navy in the world that has three submarines in its fleet.
Australia also has eight patrol aircraft, which includes two C-130J Hercules transports and four P-3 Orion reconnaissance aircraft.
There are also seven submarines in the Royal Australian Navy.
The navy has also signed a $3 billion defence export deal with Japan.
Key dates in Australia’s Aegis program The US has built six Aegis vessels and 12 aircraft carriers, with the first to arrive in 2020.
The second Aegis ship, the USS Carl Vinson, is currently in the Persian Gulf and is scheduled to arrive at sea in 2022.
Australia signed an agreement in 2015 with Japan to buy eight Aegis ships and four attack submarines, and is also negotiating a $4 billion defence trade deal with South Korea.
The first ship in Australia was commissioned in April 2018.
The third Aegis carrier, the Gerald R. Ford, is scheduled for commissioning in 2021.
Australia is also buying two more Aegis frigates: the HMAS Sydney and HMAS Canberra.
The Australian navy also has an amphibious patrol vessel (APC), the HMCS Hunter, which can conduct exercises in the water off the coast of Australia’s east coast.
The Navy’s next ship, HMAS Dandenong, is also due to arrive.
The ship’s commissioning ceremony will take place in 2019.
The fifth ship in the Australian Navy is due to be commissioned in 2021, but the Australian Government has yet to confirm whether the vessel will be the first of its kind.
In 2020, the Australian government signed a new deal with the Japanese government to purchase four Aegises frigates, the HMASS Hiryu and HMASS Kyushu.
The contract will cover two of the Aegises and four of the HMASCY Canberra.
Australia and Japan are also negotiating two new military cooperation deals, which are worth more than $100 million each.
The UK’s defence minister has confirmed that the country will purchase four of Australia and Japanese warships, with two of them being the Aegi class.
Australia, the UK and Japan have also signed defence export deals with Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the two countries with which Australia has been in a military alliance since 1979.
In 2018, the United States and Japan signed an export deal worth $12.6 billion for four Aegisers, the first ever in the US-Japan alliance.
Australia now has eight ships in its naval fleet, including two destroyers and two aircraft carriers – all of which are based on Aegis.
Australia was the first nation to build a fully-equipped Aegis aircraft carrier.
It completed its first test flight in December 2017.
The fourth Aegis vessel, the aircraft carriers USS Enterprise and USS Ross, arrived at sea on 31 December 2018.
Australia will now build the first fully-armed Aegis warship, the Aegisi, which will be launched from a shipyard in Sydney in 2019, and will carry out an initial assessment of Australia-Japan defence ties.
In 2019, Australia’s new defence minister, David Johnston, announced a new defence collaboration agreement with Japan, in which Australia will provide logistical support to Japan’s military in the event of a conflict.
